Time consuming credentialing audits play an important role in overseeing the credentialing process. Even the most experienced professionals make mistakes and overlook things – it’s part of human nature. In some cases, an element, such as primary source verification of licensure, is completed but the documentation does not get placed in the credentials file. Or perhaps an issue requiring follow-up is identified, but is forgotten when a more urgent issue presents itself. A slip like this can make for a finding of non-compliance on an accreditation survey. Likewise, failure to adequately document competency for a provider can risk patient safety.
